If you’re a Muslim visiting Corfu, you may wonder if it’s easy to find halal food in this popular European destination.

As it happens, halal food is not very easy to come by, in Corfu. To help you out, I have compiled a list of the best-rated halal restaurants on the island, which you should visit during your holiday!

Does Corfu have halal food?

Providing a simple answer – Greece is not an easy country to find halal food or to buy fresh halal meat in, for the most part. While you may not struggle to find halal options in Athens, when visiting smaller towns and islands, it is a different story.

Surprisingly, with the number of British tourists visiting Corfu each year, the island still doesn’t have a strong offer of halal food and restaurants. Traditional Greek food, however, does rely heavily on vegetables, and both vegetarian and vegan options are easy to find. Since the majority of the island is still very poor in halal options, you may opt to rely on a vegetarian diet when visiting.

In this guide, I’m hoping to help anyone wanting to find the best places to eat halal food in Corfu. While still scarce, most of the halal restaurants are located near Corfu Old town.

Is food in Corfu halal?

Much like in the rest of Greece, many of Corfu’s traditional foods are vegetarian (or have popular vegetarian variations).

Some traditional foods from Corfu that may be halal:

traditional food products in Corfu which may be halal
Gyros - food in Corfu which may be halal
Greek salad - food in Corfu which may be halal

Local products

Corfu is rich in fresh fruits and local products like kumquats, figs, and many others. Spoon sweets and nougat may be halal too, if they don’t contain pork gelatine. You can find these in the food markets in Corfu Old town, or in supermarkets across the island.

Gyros

A classic of Greek cuisine – gyros is an affordable meal option. In Corfu, you’ll be able to find places selling gyros made with lamb, beef, or chicken, which may be halal (always check with the seller or food provider). In lack of halal meat options, you can often find halloumi gyros, which is also delicious.

Salads

Greek salads are a staple in the Mediterranean, for being both refreshing and tasty. They’re a safe choice if you can’t find suitable halal options near you.
